Country Programme for São Tomé and Principe 1998-2001

In 1994 an International Conference on Population and Development was held in Cairo. The resulting Programme of Action called for the provision of voluntary family planning and reproductive health programmes across the globe. It was fully accepted that these goals must be combined with efforts to promote the empowerment of women, to slow the population growth, to reduce poverty and to protect the environment.

It is in the framework of these ideals that the UNFPA operates in São Tomé and Principe. Our programme is at every level connected to national sustainable development and all our work is closely linked with the government, the other UN Agencies, NGOs and the São Toméan society at large. Having worked with much success in São Tomé and Principe since 1977, we are now in the cycle of the Third Country Programme, which has a total budget of $2.1 million.

The Programme is divided in to three sub programmes:

Whilst each area of work is of huge importance the demands on the budget prioritise issues relating to reproductive health. Here our aims can be summarised as helping the government initiate change in some of the attitudes and behaviours of the population. Work will include giving adolescents information and advice, stressing the importance of men taking greater responsibility, and promoting awareness of the issues of sexual equality. The second area of work focuses on better co-ordinating National Planning so that the various sectors related to population and reproductive health can work together. The third area is aimed at promoting the advocacy of population and development issues, and mobilising the necessary resources and political will for them, special attention is accorded to issues of gender. In all three areas a number of specific actions are undertaken, please refer to the relevant pages for more information.
