Population and Development Strategy
The aims of this sub programme can be defined as :
to create the necessary conditions for integrating issues of population in national and sectoral planning
to improve the status of women in society
In achieving these aims we are working with the Government, national institutions and NGOs, to improve public and political awareness and provide a more thorough statistical base.
In keeping population issues at the forefront of the political agenda, advocacy is an important element of work with decision makers and media gate keepers.
At every level we give priority to helping the government and national NGOs promote womens rights. In line with this we envisage a stronger National Commission of Population and Gender, whose role will co-ordinate programmes of UNFPA and put together National action plans on gender and population issues.
In terms of research we are trying to better understand the population issues:
putting into place research on questions of population and gender in society
improving the system of collecting and analysing figures, differentiating between sexes and emphasising excluded groups
providing technical assistance to ensure these issues are addressed in the 2001 census
In working to improve womens position in society, further steps are being taken:
studying existing legislation relative to womens rights
supporting activities to build awareness around issues of sexual equality, for men and women
supporting activities that make women more aware of their rights

reproductive health
