Reproductive Health
project list
This sub-programme of UNFPA São Tomé and Principe seeks to assure a good quality of service that is widely accessible in all districts. It is based on national priorities of reducing the fertility rate, the frequency of abortions and the high incidence of STDs in the country.
Our aims are multi pronged as the subject of reproductive health crosses many side topics.
Broadly we aim to:
inform public opinion of issues surrounding reproductive health and encourage greater use of services already existing
increase contraceptive use from 15 to 25% and increase the coverage of services like:
pre and post natal care
tetanus vaccinations
obstetrics
STD treatment
post abortion counselling
These will be incorporated by assisting the government to:
improve and equip primary health care centres to offer family planning facilities
support school clinics run by nurses
establish norms, rules and orientation systems to co-ordinate reproductive health providers
reinforce local and central level management capacity, organising a structure, providing technical assistance and creating management tools
place costs of reproductive health, such as contraceptives and essential equipment, at the ordinary level of the health budget
In the framework of information, education and communication (IEC), our activities are:
to reinforce government and NGO capacity to participate in IEC
to carry out socio-cultural research of the factors determining sexual behaviour and use of reproductive services
to carry out media based information campaigns looking at male and female roles, and develop community information activities
to facilitate post abortion counselling with obstetricians in maternity centres
Responsible behaviour from adolescents will be encouraged by:
organising peer level advice
the creation of counselling services for adolescents
adapting health centres to the needs of the young in reproductive health
incorporating matters of reproductive health in school curricula for primary and pre-university classes, placing emphasis on teaching methods
